Shopping
A directory of second hand & charity shops in Leeds.
Who'd have thought there were so many charity shops in Leeds??? I've added all of them that I know of, now. If you would like to add a shop to the list, or send in a review, please email me at pilotlightleeds@gmail.com

Overpriced, poorly stocked, with the retro stall cramed full of tat only otley runners wear. Poor.

A dangerous vortex that sucks out your money. A brilliant selection of books, well presented and managed. Many hours of idle browsing can be spent here; theres always some interesting curio tucked away.

Retro Boutique

8 - 10 Headingley Lane (Hyde Park Corner)
LS6 2AS

In the great but sadly dwindling tradition of second hand shops at Hyde Park Corner, this place is a treasure trove of retro furniture, clothes, nic-nacs, houseware. Home to several different traders who share the large shop, this is the place where I bought what is, quite simply, the most comfortable chair in the world. Less letting agents, more of this kind of stuff!

My best ever charity shop purchase is a leopard print shirt which I got from here - very kitsch! So now you know.

Customer Review -
The place to buy all your marks and spencers pink shirts, copys of jaws and video tapes of minder/snooker from 1986. Like the charity shop in the league of gentleman; spartan, nothing in it and dingy. You come out of it with a depression that is impossible to remove.

Easter Saturday, 2008
Riding the crest of an mildly alcoholic bipolar upswing in mood, I text my good friend Gethyn Pugh & make plans to meet up in Yeadon, to hit the charity shops there.
On the beautiful 97 bus ride out to Yeadon (well worth the £2.70 for a dayrider in its own right)
Sunshine on snow & daffodils
Thinking of paradizziac early century summer afternoons on piltzer&prosecco
& hoping for more such nights
Listening to Suede Coming Up
'Here they come, the Beautiful Ones'
Going to talk death with Geth
Can things gets any better?
'It's connected to the sound, & it moves through the underground'.

Gethyn invents a system for remembering what order we visited the shops in.
This one is a bit weird. A few too many
new things. Geth & I are not too sure about the merits or otherwise of charity shops selling
new things... There is no reason why they shouldn't in order to make money, but they are frequently very
weird things. This shop sells tiny wardrobes. What possible use can a tiny wardrobe be?

The lady in this shop is listening to a bizarre spanish cover version of Crowded House's
Don't Dream It's Over, & she has a tortoise-shaped ochranina for sale, but beyond that, there is little to hold our interest.

I drink three pints of Guinness with Geth, in the Unit & the Aviator, fall asleep on the bus back into town, drink three glasses of wine at 42NewBriggate, then have to go home & fall asleep at 7.30 in the evening, after eating half a pizza, which is why I am now awake at 4.30 in the morning. Is this a constructive use of my time?
I am pleased with myself for starting this quest, of visiting every charity shop in Leeds.

Win things...
It's high quality Le Creuset stuff, it cost £2.50 from Yeadon Help The Aged Shop, but what the hell is it? I don't know. Geth didn't know (& he can cook). The lady in the shop didn't know...

The least sensible suggestion emailed to
pilotlightleeds@gmail.com wins the... thing. Whatever it is!
